The incident took place in Butler, Pennsylvania. Gunfire appeared to break out shortly after Trump began speaking at the rally at Butler Farm Show grounds on Saturday evening.
The former president had just begun to fire up the crowd when as many as five shots were heard, and he went down, surrounded by Secret Service agents.
Independent presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. reacted to the incident at former President Trump's Thursday rally in Pennsylvania by calling on Americans to pray for the former president.
"Now is the time for every American who loves our country to step back from the division, renounce all violence, and unite in prayer for President Trump and his family," Kennedy wrote in a post on X.
It's unclear what transpired, but Secret Service agents rushed to surround Trump onstage after the former president ducked for cover amid what some have described as popping noises or gunshots.
Kennedy's family is no stranger to tragedies. His father Robert F. Kennedy, Sr. was shot and killed by an assassin in 1968, as was his uncle, the late former President John F. Kennedy in 1963.
Rep. Dan Meuser, R-Pa., was in attendance in the front row at Trump's rally in Butler and provided an eyewitness account of the security incident.
Meuser said he was siting with Rep. Mike Kelly, R-Pa., and GOP Senate candidate Dave McCormick in the front near Trump at the rally.
He told Fox News Digital he heard what sounded like 8-10 "shots." He said it appeared multiple people in the crowd may have been hit and were down.

Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro has been briefed on the security incident at former President Trump's rally in Butler.
"Violence targeted at any political party or political leader is absolutely unacceptable," Shapiro said in a statement.
"It has no place in Pennsylvania or the United States.
"I have been briefed on the situation. @PAStatePolice are on the scene in Butler County and working with our federal and local partners."

Gunfire appeared to break out shortly after Trump began speaking at the rally at Butler Farm Show grounds on Saturday evening.
The former president had just begun to fire up the crowd when as many as five shots were heard and he went down, surrounded by Secret Service agents.
"And then the worst president in the history of our country took over. And look what happened to our country. Probably 20 million people [came in illegally]. And, you know, that's a little bit old, that chart... that chart's a couple of months old. And if you want to really see something that sad, take a look at what happened over..." Trump said before gunfire rang out.
"An incident occurred the evening of July 13 at a Trump rally in Pennsylvania. The Secret Service has implemented protective measures and the former President is safe. This is now an active Secret Service investigation and further information will be released when available," said Secret Service spokesman Anthony Guglielmi.
