Minnesota police respond to active shooter incident at Super 8 motel, ‘several victims’ reported

The Cloquet Police Department said both victims suffered gunshot wounds and the shooter was also found dead on the Super 8 motel property

Authorities in Minnesota responded to an active shooter situation at a small-town motel Monday evening, where they said two victims and the alleged gunman were ultimately found dead.

The Cloquet Police Department in Cloquet said officers responded to the facility in the area of Big Lake Road and Hwy 33 at approximately 6:30 p.m. and found both victims suffering gunshot wounds. The first victim, a 22-year-old female, was transported to St. Luke's Hospital, where she was later pronounced dead.

Later, during an investigation at the facility, authorities found a 35-year-old male victim dead in a car in the hotel parking lot. He also had a gunshot wound.

"There is no information yet on a motive for the shootings or if there was any connection between the suspect and either of the victims. Crime scene investigators are actively processing the scene. Police are confident there is no further threat to the public," Cloquet police said in a statement.

Responding officers also located a 32-year-old male, believed to be the suspect, outside the hotel property. They said he was deceased from what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound. A firearm was also found next to him.

Officers later confirmed that this deceased male was the suspect after they reviewed surveillance video from the hotel.

"I am praying for those killed in another senseless act of gun violence tonight in Cloquet," Gov. Tim Walz said on X. "To the law enforcement officers who responded, thank you. The state stands ready to provide continued support to local authorities."

The identities of the deceased were not released to the public as authorities are notifying next of kin.

"The Cloquet Police Department extends its sympathies to the families of the victims in this tragic case," the statement continued. "Thank you to the public for cooperating in sheltering in place earlier this evening while events unfolded."

Earlier in the day, police warned the public to shelter in the place. They initially said the shooting left "multiple victims."

"If you are currently in the affected area, seek shelter immediately. Go to a room with a lock if possible, close and lock all windows and doors, and remain quiet. Call 911 if you see anything suspicious," the initial news release said.
