Two Los Angeles-area police officers who were rushed to the hospital Tuesday following a shooting have died, authorities said.

Authorities said two El Monte officers responded to the intersection of Garvey and Central avenues, where a possible stabbing was taking place at the Siesta Inn. The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department said the police officers were shot by a suspect immediately after they arrived at the scene.

Both officers were said to be in grave condition following the shooting and were transported to LAC-USC Medical Center, where they ultimately succumbed to their injuries and were pronounced dead, El Monte police said.

Neither officer was identified but one was a 22-year veteran of the force while the other was a rookie and had been working as an El Monte officer for less than a year, LASD Captain Andrew Meyer said.

"There are no words to describe our grief and devastation by this senseless act as we learned about the passing of two of our police officers," the City of El Monte, El Monte Police Department and El Monte Police Officers Association said in a joint statement. "It weighs heavy on our hearts and we are sending our support to their families."

"We would also like to thank the El Monte community and our surrounding government agencies for the outpouring of support we have received in the last few hours," the statement added.

One suspect was also shot and killed during the incident, the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department said, which is assisting in the investigation.

Additional details on the shooting were not disclosed.

"These two heroes paid the ultimate sacrifice. Today they were murdered by a coward," El Monte Interim Police Chief Ben Lowry said Tuesday evening.
