Hurricane Zeta made landfall on the Caribbean coast of the eastern Yucatan Peninsula late Monday and is now forecast to target the storm-weary Gulf Coast.
The U.S. National Hurricane Center (NHC) said Tuesday evening that Zeta was a tropical storm with 65 mph winds and moved to about 410 miles south of the mouth of the Mississippi River. It was moving northwest at about 15 mph.
The 27th named storm in a very busy Atlantic season battered is forecast to restrengthen over the Gulf of Mexico and take aim at Louisiana. A hurricane warning is in effect for New Orleans and surrounding areas, and a life-threatening storm surge is expected between the mouth of the Pearl River and Dauphin Island.
