Updated

The United States has racked up a bunch of gold medals through the first week of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

There have been some triumphs, some upsets, and some shocks in Tokyo as the Olympics march onward.

Men's Basketball

The U.S. men’s basketball team won its fourth consecutive gold medal Saturday after narrowly defeating France 87-82, extending the Americans' second-longest Olympic streak since 1968. 

Kevin Durant dominated the court, scoring 29 points, with Tayson Tatum adding 19 and Damian Lillard and Jrue Holiday each scoring 11.

Valarie Allman picked up a gold medal in the women’s discus throw. It was her first Olympic gold. She had previously won a silver medal in the 2018 NACAC Championships.

Women's Water Polo

The U.S.  won its third consecutive gold medal in women’s water polo, pounding Spain 14-5 in the final at the Tokyo Olympics.

Nelly Korda, Golf

Nelly Korda gave the Americans a sweep of gold medals in golf, holding on for a one-shot victory in a thrill-a-minute finish to the Olympic women’s golf competition.

Jade Carey, Gymnastics

Jade Carey picked up her first individual gold in the individual floor exercise. She won gold in the floor exercise in the 2018 Pan American Championships and a silver medal in the 2017 World Championships.

Ryan Crouser, Athletics

Ryan Crouser set an Olympic record on the way to winning gold in the shot put. It is his second consecutive gold medal in the event.

Caeleb Dressel, Swimming

Caeleb Dressel, 24, piled up five gold medals — one for every race he had a chance in — to claim his place on swimming's Mount Rushmore. Dressel had a dominant victory in the 50-meter freestyle and a dazzling butterfly leg on the U.S. team that broke a 12-year-old world record to capture gold in the 4x100 medley relay.

Amber English, Shooting

Amber English, 31, is one of the best skeet shooters in the world and she got her first Olympic gold medal in the event. English is a U.S. Army 1st lieutenant.

Robert Finke, Swimming

Robert Finke, 21, made history when he became the first male to win the 800-meter freestyle. The event was new in the men’s category for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. It was his first gold medal. He also won gold in the 1500-meter freestyle.

Vincent Hancock, Shooting

Vincent Hancock, 32, picked up his third individual gold medal in skeet shooting. He previously won in the 2008 Olympics and the 2012 Olympics.

Nevin Harrison, Canoe Sprint

Nevin Harrison, 19, managed to win the canoe sprint at the Tokyo Olympics. She defeated Laurence Vincent-Lapointe, of Canada, and Liudmyla Luzan, of Ukraine.

Lydia Jacoby, 17, became the first Alaska native to win a gold medal at the Summer Olympics. She picked up a victory in the 100-meter breaststroke.

Chase Kalisz, Swimming

Chase Kalisz, 27, was the first American to win a gold medal at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. He won the 400-meter medley. He had picked up a silver in the same event in 2016.

Lee Kiefer, Fencing

Lee Kiefer, 27, became the first American fencer to win a gold medal in individual foil. She won the third overall gold medal for the Americans in Tokyo.

Katie Ledecky, Swimming

Katie Ledecky’s dominance in the pool continued. The 24-year-old participated and won gold in the first female 1500-meter freestyle. She closed out her Olympic appearance with another gold in the women's 800-meter freestyle for the third consecutive time. 

Suni Lee, Gymnastics

Suni Lee delivered a clutch performance in the individual all-around in Simone Biles’ absence. She became the first Hmong American to win the gold medal.

Tamyra Mensah-Stock, Wrestling

Tamyra Mensah-Stock won gold in the 68-kilogram wrestling category. She is the first African-American female Olympic gold medalist in wrestling.

Carissa Moore, 28, introduced the world to surfing at the Olympics and she won gold for the U.S. in the women’s shortboard.

Athing Mu, Athletics

Athing Mu was the first American female gold medalist in the 800-meter race since the 1968 Olympics.

Katie Nageotte took home hold in the women’s pole vault. She beat out ROC’s Anzhelika Sidorova and Britain’s Holly Bradshaw.

Xander Schauffele had two clutch putts at the end for a 4-under 67 and a one-shot victory over Rory Sabbatini of Slovakia in a wild finish to the men's golf competition.

William Shaner, 20, won the gold in the 10-meter air rifle event. He entered the Olympics having won gold in the 2020 World Cup. It was his first Olympic gold medal.

Gable Steveson won his first gold medal in dramatic fashion in the 125-kilogram freestyle wrestling event. He beat his Georgian opponent in the final seconds.

David Taylor won gold in the 86-kilogram wrestling category. He defeated Iran’s Hassan Yazdani in the finals.

Anastasija Zolotic, 18, picked up the victory in the 57-kilogram event in Tokyo. It is her first gold medal.

April Ross and Alix Klineman delivered the gold for the U.S. in women’s beach volleyball. The pair defeated Australia in straight sets.

The American relay team took home the gold in Tokyo. The team included Dressel, Blake Pieroni, Bowe Becker, Zach Apple and alternate Brooks Curry.

The 3-on-3 women’s basketball team won the gold in the sport’s debut at the Olympics. The U.S. team included Stefanie Dolson, Allisha Gray, Kelsey Plum, and Jackie Young.
