Serena Williams loses in third round of French Open to fellow American Sofia Kenin

In a stunning upset, Serena Williams, the No. 10-ranked women's tennis player in the world, was defeated in the third round of the French Open by fellow American Sofia Kenin, becoming the latest high-profile player to lose in the tournament.

Williams, 37, lost to the 20-year-old Kenin in straight sets, 6-2, 7-5, on Saturday, hours after the top-seed Naomi Osaka suffered her own shocking defeat and first Grand Slam loss since last July.

Kenin, the 35th-ranked player in the world, is a big hitter who never made it past the fourth round of a major tennis tournament in eight previous appearances. She had never won a French Open match until this year.
