President pardons former national security adviser; Neil Cavuto has the latest on 'Your World'

MSNBC contributor Mara Gay did not hesitate to compare President Trump to Nazi dictator Adolf Hitler Wednesday after Trump announced that he was pardoning former National Security Adviser Gen. Michael Flynn. 

Months after the Department of Justice sought to dismiss Flynn's guilty plea that stemmed from the Russia investigation, Trump confirmed reports that he was eyeing a pardon for his onetime aide. 

"It is my Great Honor to announce that General Michael T. Flynn has been granted a Full Pardon," Trump tweeted on Wednesday. "Congratulations to @GenFlynn and his wonderful family, I know you will now have a truly fantastic Thanksgiving!"

Following the breaking news, Gay told a panel that "we should be shocked" but added that "we should also be prepared," suggesting the Flynn announcment will be "the tip of the iceberg" of what she expects to occur before Trump leaves office in January.

"We found that the vast majority of pardons this president has made so far have been to those with whom he is personally connected or reaped some benefit from. Certainly not on the behalf of justice or the American people, God forbid," Gay said. "I think it's important to know that there are actually limits to presidential pardon power and those should really be strictly enforced. One of those limits, of course, is that the president cannot pardon people for state crimes and that includes himself, of course."

The New York Times editorial board member then alluded to testimony from Attorney General William Barr, who suggested that the president can be charged with obstruction of justice if he issues a pardon that is later perceived to be "tampering with a judicial proceeding,"

After calling the pardon a "moral outrage," Gay then referenced Martin Luther King Jr.'s 1963 "Letter from a Birmingham Jail."

"He said, never forget that everything that was done in Nazi Germany was legal," Gay said. "And really, I think that is true of so much of this presidency, but this is the most explicit example before us today."

"Well, look, once Mara Gay gets profound and quotes MLK, I can't go back to some stupid thing Trump tweeted," MSNBC host Nicolle Wallace said in agreement. 

Gay isn't the only media member to compare the Trump presidency to Nazi Germany. CNN International anchor Christiane Amanpour recently expressed regret for comparing Trump's four years in the White House to Kristallnacht, admitting she “should not have juxtaposed” Hitler’s evils with the president of the United States.
