2024 Paris Olympics: Team USA medal count after July 29

Team USA was back collecting medals at the 2024 Paris Olympics on Day 3 of the Games, adding to their total which remains at the top of the pack.

The United States now has 20 total medals in Paris, adding eight more on Monday. However, they remain with just three gold (eight silver, eight bronze).

Let’s recap the medals for Day 3, starting with men’s gymnastics breaking a drought:

TAKE A BOW, GENTLEMEN

The U.S. men’s gymnastics team went into Paris knowing they haven’t seen the podium since 2008.

Frederick Richard, Asher Hong, Brody Malone, Paul Juda, and pommel horse specialist Stephen Nedoroscik changed all of that with a bronze finish after a total score of 257.793. Japan came in at 259.594 to win gold, while China faltered late to take silver with a score of 259.062.

Nedoroscik’s near perfect pommel horse performance – he was the anchor in the final rotation – secured the podium for his U.S. squad after posting 14.866.

JUST KEEP SWIMMING

More medals came for the U.S. in the pool at Paris La Defense Arena on Monday, and it was Katie Grimes and Emma Weyant who went silver and bronze in the women’s 400-meter individual medley final. They couldn’t beat Canada’s Summer McIntosh, the favorite in the event, but they’re more than happy hitting the podium. On the men’s side,

Luke Hobson had the race of his life in the men’s 200-meter freestyle final, as he was just seven-hundredths of a second from winning gold. However, he won bronze, his first career medal.

A shocker, though, came when Lilly King, the world record holder in the 100-meter backstroke, failed to make the podium.

SKATIN’ ON ‘EM

Japan’s Yuto Horigome successfully defended his gold medal with an insane finish in his final round on Monday, but American’s Jagger Eaton (silver) and Nyjah Huston (bronze) gave him a run for his money in Paris. The skateboarding street event was electric, as both the U.S. representatives were on top of their game (and board) to advance to the finals.

EN-GARDE!

In men’s foil individual third-place match, Team USA’s Nick Itkin was able to capture the bronze as he defeated Japan’s Kazuki IImura, 15-12.

Canada appeals FIFA's penalty on women's team over drone-spying scandal

Canada appealed FIFA’s decision to dock the women's soccer team six points as part of a punishment in the squad’s drone-spying scandal which has engulfed their time in Paris.

FIFA dropped the punishment on Canada and banned coach Bev Priestman and two assistant coaches for one year over allegations team officials used a drone to spy on New Zealand practices ahead of their first Paris Olympic matches.

The legal appeal was registered in the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) as a fast-track case. The CAS said it aimed to have an appeal hearing as early as Tuesday and a three-judge panel could give verdict by Wednesday.

Canada will play its final group match on Wednesday against Colombia and it is opening to know where it stands before the game.

Canada has two wins in its Olympic group play. Under normal circumstances, the Canadians would be leading the group. But because of the penalty, they have zero points and would need a big win against Colombia to move on.

Caitlin Clark's play before WNBA's Olympic break has one coach changing her tune

Did Caitlin Clark deserve a place on the U.S. women’s basketball team roster after all?

Dawn Staley, the current South Carolina women’s basketball coach and former head coach of Team USA, suggested as much in an interview with NBC’s Mike Tirico. Clark was left off the team when it was selected in June but Staley said Clark’s play before the All-Star break may have warranted a spot.

"As a committee member, you’re charged with putting together the best team of players, the best talent," Staley said. "Caitlin is just a rookie in the WNBA, wasn’t playing bad, but wasn’t playing like she’s playing now. If we had to do it all over again, the way that she’s playing, she would be in really high consideration of making the team because she is playing head and shoulders above a lot of people.

"Shooting the ball extremely well, I mean she is an elite passer, she’s just got a great basketball IQ and she’s a little more seasoned in the pro game in a couple of months than she was two months ago."

Clark entered the break averaging 17.1 points and 8.2 assists per game for the Fever. She broke a record for most assists in a single game with 19 against the Dallas Wings.

3 American female fencers falter at Paris Olympics in shadow of match-fixing probe

Three American fencers who competed in the women’s individual sabre events on Monday fell short of achieving a medal at the Paris Olympics as a match-fixing investigation takes hold.

A match-fixing investigation was launched after two complaints were filed in an arbitration procedure known as Section 9 ahead of the Olympics by fencers who disputed whether Tatiana Nazlymov and men’s sabre fencer Mitchell Saron should have been included in that roster.

USA Today reported that documents showed both complaints were dismissed last month. Nazylmov and Saron were on the team and there was no suggestion that either committed misconduct.

“We respect the right of those Fencers who went through the Section 9 process and are mindful of the emotional strain the process puts on all parties,” USA Fencing CEO Phil Andrews told The Associated Press.

“While the investigation continues and we anticipate a report after the conclusion of the Olympic Games; both independent panels rendered their decisions and we are now focused on a healthy environment here in Paris.”

Nazylmov, Magda Skarbonkiewicz and Elizabeth Tartakovsky lost their round of 32 matches in the individual sabre portion of the event. Each will compete in the team event on Saturday.

Saron lost in the round of 16 on Saturday.

American silver medalist Haley Batten fined after cross country mountain biking event

American silver medalist Haley Batten was hit with a fine after her second-place finish in women’s cross country mountain biking on Sunday at the Paris Olympics

Batten was fined about $565 for breaking a rule on the final lap. She was jockeying for second place with Sweden’s Jenny Rissveds went she went through a lane meant for taking in food or stopping for mechanical problems.

Judges only determined that Batten broke one rule – failing to “respect the instructions of the race organization or commissaries.” Officials didn’t appear to believe her infraction was enough to warrant a disqualification.

“I knew before Tokyo that this was the race I was focusing on,” Batten said. “I’ve known for a long time that I could be good here and Tokyo was — I wanted to be on the podium there, but I wasn’t quite ready to be honest. I prepared much better to be the best I’ve ever been. For me, preparation has been in the details, studying and building every single year.”

River Seine's water quality forces triathlon swim practice cancelation again

The poor water quality of the River Seine cost Olympic triathletes another day of training on Monday. It was the second straight day practice was canceled.

World Triathlon made the decision to cancel the workout following a meeting over water quality in the river. Representatives overseeing the event conducted tests on the water in the Seine and the test showed water quality levels leading into Sunday’s session that “did not provide sufficient guarantees to allow the event to be held.”

Officials blamed it on the weather that caused a deluge during Friday’s opening ceremony and forced the postponement of some tennis matches and skateboarding competitions.

French sports minister Amélie Oudéa-Castéra told CNEWS in France on Monday that officials were optimistic and plans to control bacteria levels in the river have been effective.

But pointed to the rain being out of their hands.

“I am confident in the fact that we will be able to be there tomorrow for the men’s triathlon event,” she said.

The Paris Olympics are in full swing as more events will yield medal winners on Monday. But a cloud of controversy has taken over the Summer Games.

The opening ceremony appeared to leave a bad taste in the mouth of fans who turned onto see what kind of performance France would put on for those tuning in around the world. Many who watched believe one segment featured drag queens, a transgender model and naked singer who was stylized to resemble the Greek god Dionysus mocked The Last Supper.

Paris 2024 spokesperson Anne Descamps spoke about it on Sunday.

"Clearly there was never an intention to show disrespect to any religious group. (The opening ceremony) tried to celebrate community tolerance," Descamps told reporters, via Reuters."We believe this ambition was achieved. If people have taken any offense, we are really sorry."

The uproar resulted in reactions from across the social media landscape. American and world leaders as well as those in the sports world spoke out.
