Witness Chad Hammel was one of the lobster divers who helped rescue the teen, bringing him to safety on the shore via kayak. He recalls hearing the boy scream “I got bit! I got bit!'”

Rushing over, Hammel and friends saw that “his whole clavicle was ripped open.”

Little did they know that they were not yet out of harm’s way.

“Once we threw him up on the kayak and started heading in, that’s when I looked back, and the shark was behind the kayak. He didn’t want to give up yet.”

Treated by lifeguards before emergency personnel arrived, the boy arrived at the hospital around 7:45 a.m.
