She then struck out on her own in 1970 with her role as Mary Richards in her eponymous program. After a failed relationship, her character moves to Minneapolis and gets a gig at a local news station where she quickly becomes friends with a random group of characters. Fans could always count on her voice to be the one of reason in the hectic newsroom. The comedic actress won four Emmy Awards in the show's seven seasons. (AP) Follow FOX411.com on Twitter.

I like Charles Krauthammer and Bill O’Reilly.” Is Mary Tyler Moore a right-winger? “Maybe more of a libertarian centrist. If McCain had asked me to campaign for him, I would have." In 2011, Moore underwent elective brain surgery to remove a benign meningioma. She recovered and was honored by the Screen Actor's Guild in January.
