Selma Blair said she first experienced early symptoms of multiple sclerosis (MS) during an ordinary summer night in Miami with a friend.
At the time, the actress admits she didn't realize what was happening — her leg was asleep and she was tired. She simply shrugged it off. It wasn't until months later, in October 2018, that the star revealed her MS diagnosis and detailed how it has "disabled her."
"My flare was already hitting. I didn’t know what was happening," Blair recalled in a throwback Instagram post on Thursday.

The “Cruel Intentions” actress called her summer Florida trip a "gift," though it will always be a time period she'll associate with her disease.
"All we have is right now. This. Is the past. But I remember knowing to just feel the warmth in the breeze. The gift of this trip. Under the table my leg was dead. I couldn’t stay awake and my right hand couldn’t find my mouth. But I was happy," Blair wrote.
"My son is asleep next to me. I hear his breathing. That of a tender soul, a young boy who will wake full of energy. I am going to curl up next to him. Cause that is what this wonderful life can bring. The now. The now I love. So... goodnight," the star continued.
The post received more than 80,000 likes within just eight hours. Hundreds of people commented on Blair's post, praising the actress for being so candid.
"This is me, thank you for being a voice for our suffering ❤️," one fan commented.
"Thank you for sharing your story and journey with so many and with such honesty," another echoed.
"Such descriptive and deepest of sentiments of love @selmablair I’m usually not at a loss for words but these transported, transcended and resonated so deeply in the heart ~ ✨you are all that is so real in the greatest form of the human condition ~ fills hearts and takes one’s breath away! ✨💎✨Thank you for being so ever authentically you ~ we’re all here with you ~ filled with love and steadfast determination!!!" a third exclaimed.
Blair appeared in her first TV interview to detail her struggles with MS in late February, roughly four months after sharing the shocking diagnosis with fans. Days prior, she attended an Oscars after party with a custom cane.
"Multiple sclerosis (MS) is an unpredictable, often disabling disease that disrupts the flow of information within the brain, and between the brain and body," according to the National Mulitple Sclerosis Society. Common symptoms include fatigue, numbness, pain, walking difficulties and vision problems, among others.
