Drew Carey on why he forgave ex-fiancée Amie Harwick's alleged murderer

Drew Carey has mastered the art of forgiveness.

The funnyman, 61, chatted it up with the hosting cast of “The Talk” on Wednesday, in an interview that aired on Friday, and admitted that as much as he has forgiven Gareth Pursehouse, the man who is charged with murdering his ex-fiancée Amie Harwick, the toll her murder has had on him has been difficult to understand.

“After Amie’s murder, I took a week off. Really, I couldn’t function,” Carey said, adding that upon his return to the show for “Kids Week,” he had an opportunity to speak with high school students about the tragedy.

“I talked to them about how I forgave the guy who murdered Amie,” he said. “I did it as soon as I could, right away because he was mentally ill, the guy was abused when he was a kid and, you know, you have to be able to forgive people like that.”

“You know, I wish he never did it, or I wish he never met her,” Carey added. “When you forgive people, that doesn’t mean you have to hang out with them and be their friend.”

The “Price Is Right” host said speaking with those students was more about spreading the message of forgiveness.

“It’s important for high school kids to hear and people in general to hear. It would be so easy to carry around … every day think about revenge, which is not coming,” Carey added. “There’s nothing that’ll make up for what he did … I really try to practice instant forgiveness and unconditional love, the closest you can get to that, the better you are and I fall short all the time.”

Dr. Amie Harwick, who was 38, died on Feb. 15 after she was thrown over the third-floor balcony of her Hollywood Hills apartment, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office said. An autopsy determined she had been strangled first.

Pursehouse was arrested shortly after the death before he was released on a $2 million bond before being arrested again in connection with the death.

Pursehouse, 41, was charged with one count each of murder and first-degree residential burglary with the special circumstance allegation of lying in wait, prosecutors said. He pleaded not guilty to the murder on Thursday and is set to return to court on June 24.

“She was beautiful and fun, and cared deeply about people and improving their lives and was just a joy to be around. And I was so in love with her,” Carey said on his SiriusXM show back in February.

Three days later, Carey paid his last respects for Harwick in Pennsylvania.

He added that Pursehouse had allegedly been stalking her for 10 years and she was “deathly afraid” of him.

The special circumstance allegation of lying in wait makes Pursehouse eligible for the death penalty. Prosecutors said that the decision whether or not they'd seek capital punishment would be made later.
