Colin Kaepernick tweeted his thanks to singer Rihanna for boycotting the Super Bowl in a show of solidarity with the former San Francisco 49ers quarterback.

The “Work” singer posted a video to her Instagram Stories on Sunday of herself looking unamused on a plane as a fellow passenger watched the Super Bowl. She posted an image of Kaepernick kneeling with a caption stating, “For those of you who thought I was watching Super Bowl…we beefin.”

Kaepernick posted a photo of Rihanna’s Instagram with a message to the singer.

“I really appreciate Rihanna keeping it [100 emoji, fist raised emoji],” he wrote.

Kaepernick, 31, made headlines during the 2016 NFL season after he started kneeling during the national anthem before games to protest social and racial injustices. He opted out of his contract with the 49ers the following offseason, and since then no NFL team has signed him.

Kaepernick filed a grievance case accusing NFL owners of colluding against him to keep him out of the league under a collective bargaining agreement.

Rihanna reportedly declined to perform at the Super Bowl LIII Halftime Show in a show of support of Kaepernick. Rapper Cardi B said she received an offer to perform but turned it down for the same reason. Maroon 5 ended up headlining the Halftime Show, along with Travis Scott and Big Boi.

Other stars also boycotted the Super Bowl, including Nick Cannon, singer Janelle Monáe and director Ava DuVernay.
