Carrie Underwood is the first to admit she had a rough year.

The country singer opened up about taking time off to do some "soul-searching" in 2017.

"A lot happened in 2017 during my 'off year,'" Underwood told Redbook magazine. "I love it when people say, 'You took a year off.' I’m like, 'You know, I had this shoot and this thing, and I was writing this and doing that.' There was always so much to do, but it was also a very soul-searching year for me."

The 35-year-old was noticeably absent from the public eye through some of 2017 and the beginning of 2018. Fans were first tipped off that something was wrong when Underwood revealed in November she required 50 stitches after a "freak random accident" left her "not quite looking the same."

CARRIE UNDERWOOD'S FACE INJURY EXPLAINED

"There were some personal things that happened," the singer said without elaborating. "And I had the accident and all of that to get through…and just life. Life is full of ups and downs, and I might have had a few more downs than ups last year."

Underwood did share several updates with fans over time that her face had "been healing pretty nicely" but she kept her face out-of-sight. Finally, she debuted her "new face" at the ACM Awards in April and there appeared to be no noticeable difference.

Underwood went on to explain why she had initially warned fans she may look a little different the next time they saw her.

"Any time someone gets injured, it looks pretty bad in the beginning, and you’re like, 'What is this going to wind up like?' You just don’t know," she said. "It was also a perception thing, because I look at myself [now] and I see it quite a bit, but other people are like, 'I wouldn’t have even noticed.' Nobody else looks at you as much as you think they do. Nobody notices as much as you think they will, so that’s been nice to learn."

"I wish I’d gotten some awesome plastic surgery to make this [scar] look better. But I try not to worry too much about it...I don’t care. I’m just trying to raise my son and live my life."
